Whole School Approach to Using Technology

Author Background

Milissa Gavel is the Principal of Davison Elementary School in Melville Saskatchewan. Milissa received her Masters in Education in the area of Curriculum and Instruction (with a focus on SMART Board technology) from the University of Regina in 2006. Being an early adopter of SMART technology, Gavel quickly realized the educational benefits and was excited about the opportunity to share them with her colleagues. As a former grade 6 teacher she implemented a Peer Mentoring Program in her own school to encourage others to use SMART technology. This program is still in place 4 years later and has evolved into helping all teachers, EA’s , teacher interns, substitute teachers and community members to use many forms of technology effectively for teaching and learning. Gavel has been presenting in schools, universities and provincial conferences for over 5 years sharing her knowledge of SMART Board technology and best practices for peer mentoring with technology. In 2004, Gavel received the award for Innovation in Technology from Industry Canada. In 2008, Gavel received the Prime Ministers Award for Excellence in Teaching and was flown to Ottawa to receive the award from Prime Minister Stephen Harper. In 2008, Gavel was awarded the designation of a SMART Exemplary Educator by SMART Technologies, and was hired as principal of Davison School. In that same year Davison School was deemed a SMART Showcase School due to its “Whole School Approach to Using Technology. In 2009, SMART profiled Davison School in its August issue of the EDcompass Newletter. As a result of the peer mentoring program, Gavel is proud to say she currently has one teacher participating in the SMARTer Kids Connection Program, 3 teachers selected into the Division’s Leadership Academy, and several teachers presenting at local and provincial conference sharing their knowledge of technology use across subject areas. Just recently Gavel has had the opportunity to share the work of her school both nationally and internationally. In May of 2010, Gavel delivered the Keynote speech at the SMART C3 Learner Conference in Calgary, Alberta. Immediately after that she and two of her teachers, as well as two colleagues from the University of Regina flew to Seoul, Korea to speak at the 2^nd World Conference on Arts Education about the work being done as a part of Davison School partnership with the University of Regina.

Using SMART Response to Improve Reading Comprehension Workshop Outline

This workshop will highlight the use of the SMART Response System to assess student understanding in the area of reading comprehension. SMART Response is a handheld clicker that looks like a remote control. This SMART Technologies product comes in a set of 32 and when used during a lesson, every child is required to participate by entering their responses into their own hand handheld clicker. This educational tool promotes hands on learning, participation, and engagement while gathering data for the teacher and saving marking time. In this session participants will observe a reading lesson being modeled by myself and will be active participants in the role of students.

Participants will learn:

What the software is and it can improve student outcomes
How it works in the context of the classroom
How to collect data quickly and easily using SMART Response

This interactive and informative session will help you to engage your students, differentiate your instruction and motivate your colleagues.
